Isaiah 40:28-29 – Meaning & Devotional
"Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength."
What This Verse Means
Isaiah poses rhetorical questions that expose the absurdity of doubting God's power. The everlasting Creator — who flung stars into space and sculpted mountains — never grows tired, never runs out of energy, never faces a problem beyond His understanding. His resources are infinite.
But the truly remarkable promise is in verse 29: this inexhaustible God shares His power with the weakest among us. He doesn't give strength to the strong — He gives power to the faint and increases might for those who have none. Human weakness becomes the qualifying condition for divine strength.
Historical Context
These words were spoken to Israelites in exile who felt forgotten and powerless. Decades of captivity had drained their hope. Isaiah reminds them that God's power hasn't diminished — it's as boundless as when He created the universe. The same Creator-power is available to the weakest exile.
How to Apply This Today
When you're exhausted — physically, emotionally, spiritually — don't rely on willpower alone. Acknowledge your weakness honestly and ask the inexhaustible God for His strength. He specializes in empowering the faint, not the self-sufficient.
