Colossians 3:15 – Meaning & Devotional
"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful."
What This Verse Means
Paul commands believers to let God's peace serve as the ruling authority in their hearts. The word 'rule' literally means 'act as umpire' — God's peace should be the final decision-maker in our inner lives. When we face choices, the presence or absence of God's peace serves as a guide.
This peace is not individualistic but communal — we are called 'in one body.' Peace with God leads to peace with others. And thankfulness is the atmosphere in which peace flourishes. A grateful heart is a peaceful heart.
Historical Context
Paul wrote to the Colossians to counter false teachings that were disturbing the church's peace. By instructing them to let God's peace rule, he provided a practical standard for discerning truth from error and maintaining unity in the community.
How to Apply This Today
Use God's peace as your internal guide. When making decisions, pay attention to whether you sense God's peace or inner turmoil. Cultivate thankfulness as the environment where peace grows. Let peace be the umpire that settles disputes in your heart.
