2 Corinthians 9:7 – Meaning & Devotional
"Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver."
What This Verse Means
God cares about the attitude behind our giving more than the amount. Giving should be purposeful (planned), voluntary (not forced), and joyful (not resentful). God loves — literally delights in — someone who gives with a cheerful heart.
The Greek word for 'cheerful' is hilaros, from which we get 'hilarious.' God wants our giving to come from such overflow of joy that it's almost laughably generous.
Historical Context
Paul was encouraging the Corinthians to follow through on their pledge to help the impoverished Jerusalem church. He emphasized that giving should come from willing hearts, not external pressure.
How to Apply This Today
Evaluate your giving: is it purposeful, voluntary, and joyful? If giving feels burdensome, ask God to change your heart before changing your budget. Generosity flows from gratitude.
