Obadiah Meaning in the Bible

Obadiah is the Hebrew 'Ovadyah (עֹבַדְיָה), from 'aved, 'servant, worker,' plus the divine name Yah. It means 'servant of the LORD' — or, read as a statement, 'one who worships Yahweh.' The KJV records at least a dozen distinct men with the name, which tells you how ordinary and how aspirational it was in Israelite families.

The most vivid is not the prophet but Ahab's household steward in 1 Kings 18. The text says he 'feared the LORD greatly,' and then explains what that meant in practice: when Jezebel was executing the prophets, Obadiah 'took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water' (1 Kings 18:4). He did this while serving in the palace of the king who was killing them. It is one of Scripture's clearest portraits of faithful, dangerous, unglamorous work inside a hostile institution.

The prophet Obadiah wrote the shortest book in the Old Testament — twenty-one verses against Edom, the nation descended from Esau, for standing by while Jerusalem was sacked. Its charge is bystanding: 'in the day that thou stoodest on the other side... even thou wast as one of them' (v. 11). The book ends with 'the kingdom shall be the LORD'S,' which is a remarkably large closing line for so short a text.

Obadiah is currently rare in English-speaking countries, carrying a slightly Puritan or Dickensian flavour, but it belongs to the same four-syllable Hebrew family as Zachariah and Jeremiah that parents keep rediscovering. The natural short forms are Obie and Diah.
