Marigold Meaning — Origin & Biblical Significance

Marigold is a compound of Mary and gold, recorded in English by the fourteenth century. The flower was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and used to decorate churches on her feast days; in some regions it was called 'Mary's gold' outright, and the Old English name for the pot marigold was simply golde. It is one of a small family of Marian plant names that also includes lady's mantle, rosemary, and the Christmas rose.

The name is not in Scripture. What it has is a direct connection to a woman who very much is. Mary's own words in Luke 1:46–48 — 'My soul doth magnify the Lord... for he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden' — are the model most families are reaching for. The Magnificat is the longest speech given to any woman in the New Testament.

Gold itself is heavily loaded in Scripture, and rarely in the way modern readers expect. It appears as the first gift of the magi (Matthew 2:11), as the material of the mercy seat, and — most tellingly — as the metaphor for tested faith: 'that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise' (1 Peter 1:7). Peter's point is that faith outranks the gold, not the reverse.

Marigold is rare everywhere in the English-speaking world and has a distinctly British-vintage flavour, sitting alongside Clementine, Marigold's cousin Rosemary, and Primrose. Goldie, Mari, Mae and Maisie are all workable short forms, and it is one of the few flower names that is also a devotional reference.
