Imogen has the most unusual origin story of any name on this list. It first appears in the 1623 First Folio as the heroine of Shakespeare's Cymbeline. The consensus among textual scholars is that it is a misprint for Innogen, a name in Holinshed's Chronicles that Shakespeare drew from, itself probably from the Gaelic inghean, 'maiden, girl,' or the Irish Fionnghuala. The typo stuck, the play endured, and a name was born from a compositor's slip.
