Huldah (Hebrew חֻלְדָּה) means 'weasel' or 'mole,' from the word choled. It is an unglamorous animal name of the same sort as Deborah ('bee') and Tamar ('palm'), and the plainness of it is part of the point: Hebrew names are descriptive, not decorative.
Her moment comes in 2 Kings 22. Workmen repairing the temple under Josiah find the book of the law, long neglected. The king tears his clothes and sends the high priest, the scribe and three other officials to enquire of the LORD. They do not go to Jeremiah, who was prophesying at that very time, or to Zephaniah. They go to Huldah, 'the wife of Shallum,' who dwelt in Jerusalem 'in the college' (2 Kings 22:14).
Her answer is unhedged. Judgment is coming on the place as written; but because Josiah's heart was tender and he humbled himself, 'thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place' (2 Kings 22:20). Her word authenticates the scroll and launches the most thorough reformation in Judah's history.
Huldah is one of only a handful of named prophetesses in the Old Testament, alongside Miriam, Deborah, Noadiah and the wife of Isaiah. The name is very rarely used today, which is a pity — it belongs to a woman whose judgment the highest officials in the kingdom took at face value.
