Hanani (Hebrew חֲנָנִי) comes from chanan, 'to be gracious,' and is best read as 'gracious' or a shortened form of Hananiah, 'the LORD is gracious.' It is one of the most common roots in Hebrew naming, behind Hannah, John, Ananias and Anna.
The first Hanani is a seer who confronts Asa, king of Judah, for buying Syrian help instead of relying on God: 'the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him' (2 Chronicles 16:9). Asa's response is to put him in a prison house. His son Jehu later rebukes another king, so the family kept the habit.
The second is Nehemiah's brother, and he is the reason the book exists. 'Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah' and reported that the wall of Jerusalem was broken down and its gates burned (Nehemiah 1:2-3). Nehemiah sat down and wept, and then asked the king for leave to go. Hanani is later given joint charge of the city (Nehemiah 7:2), commended as 'a faithful man' who feared God above many.
Modern use is largely Jewish, and the name is easy in English at two syllables. Both bearers are remembered for the same thing: saying out loud what everyone else was managing around.
