    In his later years, Asa makes an alliance with Syria against the northern kingdom rather than trusting God as he did earlier. The seer Hanani rebukes him: 'The eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.'

    Asa responds with anger, imprisoning the prophet and oppressing some of the people. When afflicted with a severe foot disease, he still refuses to seek God, turning only to physicians. Asa's tragic decline shows that a strong start does not guarantee a strong finish.
