    Editor’s reflection

The wife Hosea was told to marry — a name that became a whole book's argument.

Gomer (גֹּמֶר) is usually connected to gamar, 'to complete' or 'to come to an end.' Two very different figures carry it in the KJV: Gomer the son of Japheth in Genesis 10:2, a nation-name later linked with peoples north of the Black Sea, and Gomer the daughter of Diblaim in Hosea 1:3.

It is the second who made the name known. God tells Hosea, 'Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms.' The marriage is the sermon: Israel's covenant unfaithfulness is not argued in the abstract, it is acted out in a prophet's household, and the children are given sign-names — Jezreel, Loruhamah ('not having obtained mercy'), Loammi ('not my people'). Hosea 3 then has him buy her back for fifteen pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley.

The book keeps refusing to end where the betrayal does. That is the reason the name still gets discussed in sermons even though almost nobody gives it to a child today — in English it also collides with a well-known sitcom character, which has finished off whatever usability it had.

“I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy.”
    — Hosea 2:23 KJV
