Genesis Meaning in the Bible

Genesis is Greek: genesis (γένεσις), 'origin, source, coming into being,' from the root gen-, which also gives us generation, genealogy, and genus. The Hebrew name of the book is Bereshit, simply its first word, 'in the beginning.' The Greek title came from the Septuagint translators, who lifted it from Genesis 2:4, 'these are the generations of the heavens and of the earth.'

That phrase — the toledot formula, 'these are the generations of' — structures the entire book, appearing eleven times and dividing it into sections. Genesis is not organised as a chronology but as a series of origin accounts: of the cosmos, of humanity, of the nations, and then of one family. Matthew 1:1 deliberately echoes the same word, opening the New Testament with biblos geneseos, 'the book of the generation of Jesus Christ.'

Genesis is not a personal name anywhere in Scripture, and it is worth saying that plainly. It entered modern naming in the 1990s in the US, largely through African-American and Latina naming traditions, and it functions the way virtue names do — a word chosen for what it declares rather than for a person who bore it.

What it declares is unusually strong. A child named Genesis carries a word that the Bible attaches to the two moments Scripture treats as the beginning of everything: creation in Genesis 1:1 and the arrival of Christ in Matthew 1:1. Most modern coinages cannot claim that.
