What does Baruch mean in the Bible?
Baruch means "Blessed" and is a name of Hebrew origin. Below is what Scripture and Christian tradition attach to that meaning.
Baruch means "blessed" in Hebrew. He was the faithful scribe and secretary of the prophet Jeremiah — the man who wrote down, preserved, and reread Jeremiah's prophecies during one of the darkest periods in Judah's history.
When God commanded Jeremiah to write down all His words, Baruch took dictation and produced a scroll. When Jeremiah was imprisoned, Baruch read the scroll publicly in the temple. King Jehoiakim listened to portions of the scroll, then contemptuously cut it with a penknife and burned it piece by piece in his fire. God commanded Jeremiah and Baruch to rewrite everything — plus additional judgments against the king.
Baruch's faithfulness came at great personal cost. He lamented his own suffering, and God responded directly: "Seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not." This divine rebuke reframed Baruch's expectations — in a time of national catastrophe, preservation of life itself was a blessing.
Baruch remained with Jeremiah through the fall of Jerusalem and was taken with him to Egypt. His name — "blessed" — proved true not in comfort but in the privilege of serving alongside one of God's greatest prophets.
