Barnabas

Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, was so known for his encouraging nature that the apostles gave him the name Barnabas, meaning "son of encouragement" or "son of consolation." He first appears in Scripture selling property and laying the money at the apostles' feet for distribution to those in need, exemplifying the generous spirit of the early church.

When Saul of Tarsus first came to Jerusalem after his conversion, the disciples were afraid of him, not believing he was truly a disciple. It was Barnabas who took Saul, brought him to the apostles, and vouched for his conversion and preaching. Without Barnabas's advocacy, the church's acceptance of Paul might have been significantly delayed.

The Jerusalem church later sent Barnabas to Antioch, where Gentiles were coming to faith. Barnabas saw God's grace at work and encouraged the believers. He then traveled to Tarsus to find Saul and bring him to Antioch, where they taught together for a year. The church at Antioch sent Barnabas and Saul on the first missionary journey, accompanied by John Mark.

When Mark abandoned the mission, Barnabas later wanted to give him a second chance, but Paul refused. The disagreement was sharp, and they parted ways—Barnabas taking Mark and Paul taking Silas. Yet Barnabas's investment in Mark paid off: Mark later proved useful to Paul and wrote the Gospel bearing his name. Barnabas's legacy is the courage to see potential in people others had given up on.
