The Biblical Answer
The Queen of Sheba appears in 1 Kings 10 and 2 Chronicles 9 as a foreign monarch who visited Solomon to test his legendary wisdom with hard questions. Sheba was located in southern Arabia, in the region of modern Yemen, and was a center of the incense and spice trade. The queen's wealth was immense, and her caravan arrived with 'a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones.' She had heard of Solomon's fame 'concerning the name of the LORD,' and she came 'to prove him with hard questions.' Her visit was both a diplomatic mission and a genuine inquiry. She wanted to see if Solomon's wisdom and wealth matched the reports she had heard. When she met Solomon, 'there was no more spirit in her.' He answered all her questions; nothing was too difficult for him. She saw his magnificent palace, the food at his table, the seating of his officials, the attire of his waiters, and the burnt offerings he made at the house of the Lord. The queen was overwhelmed: 'It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of thy acts and of thy wisdom: Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard.' She then pronounced a blessing on Solomon's God: 'Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore made he thee king, to do judgment and justice.' She gave Solomon 120 talents of gold, a great quantity of spices, and precious stones — so many that 'there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.' The Queen of Sheba's visit holds prophetic significance. Jesus referred to her as a witness against the unbelieving generation of His day: 'The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.' If a foreign queen traveled far to hear Solomon, how much more should people come to Christ, who is 'greater than Solomon.' Her story illustrates that God's wisdom attracts seekers from every nation and that encountering divine truth produces worship and blessing.
