What "Who Was Joshua?" Actually Means
Joshua served as Moses' assistant for 40 years before God chose him to lead Israel into the Promised Land. He was one of only two spies (with Caleb) who gave a faithful report after scouting Canaan, trusting God could deliver on His promise despite the formidable enemies. After Moses' death, God commissioned Joshua with the famous words, 'Be strong and of a good courage' (Joshua 1:6). He led the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River, the conquest of Jericho (whose walls fell after Israel marched around them seven days), and the systematic campaign to take the Promised Land. Joshua divided the territory among the twelve tribes and delivered a powerful farewell speech, declaring, 'As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD' (Joshua 24:15). His name (Yehoshua) means 'the LORD saves' — the same name as Jesus (Yeshua in Hebrew). Joshua's life demonstrates the power of faithful obedience, courageous leadership, and trust in God's promises.
