What "Who was John the Baptist?" Actually Means
John the Baptist was born to the priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth, a relative of Mary. His birth was announced by the angel Gabriel and fulfilled Old Testament prophecy about a messenger who would prepare the way for the Messiah. John lived an ascetic life in the wilderness, wearing camel's hair and eating locusts and wild honey. He preached a baptism of repentance and attracted large crowds. When Jesus came to him, John baptized Him in the Jordan River. John was later imprisoned and beheaded by Herod Antipas for condemning Herod's unlawful marriage. Jesus called John the greatest man born of women.
