What "Who Was James the Apostle (Son of Zebedee)?" Actually Means
James, son of Zebedee, was a fisherman called with his brother John to follow Jesus. Together they were nicknamed 'Boanerges' (Sons of Thunder), possibly for their fiery temperament (Mark 3:17). James was part of Jesus' inner circle, witnessing the Transfiguration (Mark 9:2), the raising of Jairus' daughter (Mark 5:37), and Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane (Mark 14:33). He once asked Jesus for a position of honor in the kingdom (Mark 10:37), to which Jesus responded with a lesson about servanthood. James became the first apostle martyred—King Herod Agrippa I had him executed by the sword around 44 AD (Acts 12:2). His martyrdom fulfilled Jesus' prophecy that James would indeed drink of His cup of suffering (Mark 10:39).
