The Biblical Context

Hur appears in the narrative of Israel's battle against Amalek at Rephidim. When the Amalekites attacked, Moses stood on a hill with the rod of God in his hand. As long as Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed; when he let it down, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands grew heavy, so 'they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.' This simple act — holding up Moses' arms — became the means of Israel's victory. Hur's willingness to stand beside Moses and bear his burden exemplifies the supporting role that faithful servants play in God's work. Hur is also identified as the grandfather of Bezaleel, the master craftsman who built the tabernacle. Exodus 31:2 calls Bezaleel 'the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.' This connection suggests that Hur was a man of some prominence in the tribe of Judah, and that his family line produced not only a faithful supporter of Moses but also the chief artisan of Israel's most sacred structure. Some scholars identify this Hur with the Hur mentioned in Exodus 17, though the text does not explicitly confirm this. Hur's story, though brief, illustrates an important principle: God's victories are often won through the faithful support of those who stand beside the leader, bear their burdens, and do what is needed without seeking recognition. Hur held up Moses' arms, and Israel won the battle. His grandson built the tabernacle, and Israel had a place to worship. From support to craftsmanship, the family of Hur served God's purposes across generations.
