The Biblical Context

Gad first appears in 1 Samuel 22:5, when David was hiding in the hold from Saul. 'And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah.' From that point forward Gad served as 'David's seer' (2 Samuel 24:11). He delivered the Lord's word to David after the sinful census, presenting three choices of judgment: seven years of famine, three months of fleeing before enemies, or three days of pestilence. David chose to fall into the hand of the Lord rather than into the hand of man, and the plague that followed claimed seventy thousand lives. Gad then commanded David to rear an altar at the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite — the very site that would later become the temple mount. David's purchase of that ground and the offering of sacrifice there fixed the location of God's house. Gad, with Nathan and David himself, also helped order the musical service of the temple. 2 Chronicles 29:25 says, 'And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.' He also wrote a record of David's reign: 'in the book of Gad the seer' (1 Chronicles 29:29). Though less prominent than Nathan, Gad's quiet faithfulness shaped Israel's worship and government for centuries. He reminds us that not every servant of God is in the spotlight, yet the Lord uses each one strategically for His purposes.
