What Is Submission in the Bible — Meaning Explained

Submission is one of the most misunderstood and resisted concepts in modern Christianity, yet it is woven throughout Scripture as an essential aspect of godly living. The Greek word hupotasso means to place oneself under, to yield, to subject — not forced compliance but voluntary, glad alignment with God's order. The first and most fundamental submission is to God Himself. James commands, 'Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.' This is the foundation of all other submission — recognizing God's absolute authority as Creator, Savior, and Lord. Jesus modeled perfect submission to the Father: 'I do always those things that please him,' 'Not my will, but thine, be done.' His life of submission culminated in the cross, where He 'became obedient unto death.' The New Testament teaches several spheres of human authority to which believers are called to submit. Wives to husbands: 'Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.' This is not inferiority but a functional order within marriage that reflects Christ and the church. Husbands, in turn, are commanded to love their wives sacrificially, as Christ loved the church. Children to parents: 'Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.' Employees to employers: 'Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters.' Citizens to government: 'Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake.' Church members to leaders: 'Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves.' Believers to one another: 'Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility.' Submission is not blind obedience. When human authority commands what God forbids, believers must obey God rather than men, as the apostles demonstrated. But within the bounds of God's law, submission is an act of faith — trusting that God's order, though sometimes difficult, is ultimately for our good and His glory. It is not weakness but strength, not oppression but the pattern of Christ Himself, who 'humbled himself, and became obedient unto death.' True submission produces peace, order, trust, and ultimately the exaltation that God promises to the humble.
