What "What Is Soul-Winning in the Bible?" Actually Means
Soul-winning is the passionate pursuit of bringing lost sinners to salvation in Jesus Christ. The term comes from Proverbs 11:30: 'The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.' In the New Testament, soul-winning is called evangelism, witnessing, preaching the gospel, and fishing for men. It is the central mission of the church and the highest calling of every believer. The foundation of soul-winning is the gospel — the good news that Jesus Christ died for sinners, was buried, rose again, and offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who repent and believe. Paul summarized it: 'I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.' The soul-winner's message is not self-improvement, moral advice, or religious ritual but the finished work of Christ on behalf of guilty sinners. The method of soul-winning varies. Some preach to crowds, like Peter on the Day of Pentecost when three thousand were saved. Some reason one-on-one, like Philip with the Ethiopian eunuch. Some share personal testimony, like the Samaritan woman who brought her whole city to Jesus. Some live visibly Christian lives that provoke questions, like the early church whose love and unity attracted converts. But all methods must include the verbal proclamation of the gospel, for 'faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' The motive for soul-winning is love — love for God who commands it and love for the lost who need it. Paul expressed this urgency: 'Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.' He also expressed compassion: 'I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh.' The soul-winner sees the lost not as enemies or statistics but as precious souls for whom Christ died. Soul-winning requires prayer, boldness, and persistence. Jesus taught His disciples to pray that the Lord of the harvest would send forth laborers. Paul prayed for boldness to speak the mystery of the gospel. And every believer is commanded to 'be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.' The result of soul-winning is eternal. Every person brought to Christ is a soul saved from hell, a life transformed by grace, and a new member of God's eternal family. No work on earth has greater or more lasting consequences.
