What Is Hamartiology — Meaning Explained

Hamartiology is the theological study of sin — its origin, nature, effects, categories, and remedy. The word comes from the Greek 'hamartia,' meaning 'missing the mark,' and 'logos,' meaning study. Sin is the central problem of human existence and the reason Christ came to die. Understanding sin is essential to understanding salvation. The origin of sin is found in the fall of Satan and the disobedience of Adam and Eve. Satan, originally a glorious angel, rebelled against God through pride and became the tempter. In the garden, he deceived Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit and gave it to Adam. Their single act of disobedience brought sin, death, and curse into the world. Romans 5:12 explains, 'By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.' The nature of sin is rebellion against God. It is not merely making mistakes or violating abstract rules — it is a personal offense against a holy God. Sin includes both acts (sins of commission) and failures to act (sins of omission). It includes outward behavior and inward attitudes — lust, hatred, pride, and covetousness. Jesus taught that sin begins in the heart: 'out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.' The effects of sin are comprehensive. It separated humanity from God, brought physical and spiritual death, corrupted human nature, enslaved the will, produced guilt and shame, and subjected creation to futility. Every human problem — suffering, conflict, injustice, and sorrow — traces back to sin. Scripture describes sin in various categories. Original sin is the inherited corruption and guilt from Adam. Actual sin is the individual sins people commit. Mortal sin (in Catholic theology) destroys grace; venial sin weakens it. Sins of commission are things done that should not be done; sins of omission are things left undone that should be done. The remedy for sin is Jesus Christ. He lived the sinless life we could not live and died the death we deserved. His atonement propitiated God's wrath, reconciled God and man, redeemed captives from sin, and justified the ungodly. Through faith in Christ, sinners are forgiven, regenerated, and adopted as God's children. Hamartiology leads to humility — recognizing the depth of our own sin. It leads to gratitude — appreciating the greatness of Christ's salvation. And it leads to holiness — hating sin as God hates it and pursuing righteousness by the Spirit's power.
