What Is Effectual Grace — Meaning Explained

Effectual grace is the sovereign work of God the Holy Spirit whereby He irresistibly draws the elect to Jesus Christ, regenerating their hearts and enabling them to believe. Unlike common grace, which is extended to all mankind, effectual grace is specific to those whom God has chosen before the foundation of the world. In Ephesians 1:19-20, the Apostle Paul speaks of the 'exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,' which is the same power that raised Christ from the dead. This indicates that salvation is not a product of human willpower, but a divine resurrection of the spiritually dead soul. The scripture in Philippians 2:13 confirms this by stating, 'For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.' Man, in his natural state, is dead in trespasses and sins and cannot come to God on his own. Therefore, God must provide the 'repentance to the acknowledging of the truth' as mentioned in 2 Timothy 2:25. This grace is called effectual because it never fails to achieve its purpose; it creates a new heart that willingly and joyfully embraces the Savior. It is the application of Christ's redemption to the individual, ensuring that all whom the Father has given to the Son shall come to Him. This doctrine humbles the sinner and exalts the glory of God's free and sovereign mercy.
