"If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee." — Exodus 15:26 (KJV)
What "What Does the Bible Say About Divine Healing?" Actually Means
Divine healing is a major theme throughout Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. God introduced Himself to Israel as 'Jehovah-Rapha' — the LORD who heals (Exodus 15:26). The Psalms declare that God 'forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases' (Psalm 103:3). Jesus' healing ministry was a central component of His earthly work. Matthew summarized that Jesus 'went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people' (Matthew 9:35). He healed lepers, paralytics, the blind, the deaf, the demon-possessed, and even raised the dead. His healings were signs of the kingdom — evidence that God's rule was breaking into the fallen world. The apostles continued this healing ministry in the early church. Peter and John healed the lame man at the Beautiful Gate. Paul's handkerchiefs brought healing to the sick. James instructed the church: 'Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up' (James 5:14-15). However, the Bible does not promise that every believer will be healed of every illness in this life. Paul left Trophimus sick at Miletus. Timothy had frequent infirmities for which Paul prescribed wine. Paul himself suffered a 'thorn in the flesh' that God chose not to remove. The ultimate healing that God promises is resurrection glory. In the new heavens and new earth, 'God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away' (Revelation 21:4). Christians should pray for healing with faith, recognizing God's power and compassion. But they should also accept that God's ways are higher than ours, and that His purposes in allowing suffering may include deeper fellowship with Christ, the refinement of character, and the display of His grace. Healing, when it comes, is a gift of grace. When it does not come, faith rests in the God who works all things for good.
