What "What Is the Meaning of Baptism?" Actually Means
Baptism is one of the two ordinances Jesus gave to the church (along with the Lord's Supper). He commanded it in the Great Commission: 'Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost' (Matthew 28:19). Romans 6:3-4 explains its symbolism: going under the water represents dying and being buried with Christ; coming up represents rising to new life. Baptism does not save — the thief on the cross was saved without it (Luke 23:43) — but it is an act of obedience for those who have believed. In the book of Acts, baptism consistently followed conversion (Acts 2:41, 8:36-38, 16:33). The Greek word baptizo means 'to immerse or submerge,' indicating full immersion as the biblical mode. Baptism is a beautiful public testimony that says, 'I have died to my old life and been raised to new life in Christ.' It is the first step of obedience for every new believer.
