What Does 'I Am the Vine' Mean — Meaning Explained

In John 15:1-8, Jesus declares, 'I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.' Branches (believers) must 'abide' in the vine to bear fruit: 'He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing' (John 15:5). The Father prunes fruitful branches to increase their yield (v.2) — trials and discipline serve productive purposes. Branches that don't bear fruit are taken away (v.2). The fruitless branch is 'cast forth... and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire' (v.6). Abiding means maintaining a vital, dependent relationship with Christ through His Word: 'If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you' (v.7). The purpose of fruit-bearing is 'Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples' (v.8). The metaphor teaches complete dependence — apart from Christ, the branch is lifeless and useless.
