Paul wrote, 'Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?' (2 Corinthians 6:14-15). The metaphor comes from Deuteronomy 22:10: 'Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together.' Mismatched animals pull at different speeds and directions, making the work ineffective and painful for both. In marriage, spiritual incompatibility affects every major decision — how to raise children, how to spend money, how to handle conflict, what values guide the home. The Old Testament repeatedly shows intermarriage with unbelievers leading to idolatry — Solomon's foreign wives 'turned away his heart' (1 Kings 11:4). Nehemiah confronted intermarriage as a covenant violation (Nehemiah 13:25-27). However, if a believer is already married to an unbeliever, Paul counsels staying: 'The unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife' (1 Corinthians 7:14). The principle extends beyond marriage to business partnerships and close alliances where spiritual direction conflicts. The goal is not isolation from unbelievers but wisdom in binding commitments.
