The Biblical Context
Women in Scripture are far from marginalized. They are created equally in God's image (Genesis 1:27). Proverbs 31 celebrates the virtuous woman as a businesswoman, leader, and spiritual example. Deborah was a judge and leader of Israel (Judges 4-5). Esther saved her nation. Ruth's faithfulness placed her in Christ's genealogy. In the New Testament, women were first at the empty tomb and first commissioned to proclaim the resurrection (Matthew 28:1-10). Priscilla taught Apollos (Acts 18:26). Phoebe was a deacon (Romans 16:1). Lydia was a businesswoman and church leader (Acts 16:14-15). Paul taught that 'there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus' (Galatians 3:28) regarding spiritual standing. He also taught complementary roles: husbands love wives sacrificially, wives respect and submit to husbands (Ephesians 5:22-33). First Timothy 2:12 restricts certain teaching/authority roles in the church, though interpretation varies among traditions. The Bible elevates women while honoring distinct callings.
