What "What Does It Mean to Be Made in God's Image?" Actually Means
Genesis 1:26-27 declares that God created humanity 'in his own image' — a distinction shared by no other creature. This 'image of God' (imago Dei) is the foundation of human dignity and value. It does not mean physical resemblance — God is spirit (John 4:24). Rather, it includes intellectual capacity (reason, language, creativity), moral awareness (conscience, sense of right and wrong), relational ability (capacity for love, community, and knowing God), spiritual nature (awareness of the eternal, capacity for worship), and representative authority (dominion over creation, Genesis 1:28). The fall marred but did not destroy the image (Genesis 9:6, James 3:9). Christ is 'the image of the invisible God' perfectly (Colossians 1:15), and believers are being 'renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him' (Colossians 3:10). The image of God is why every human life — from conception to natural death — is sacred, and why racism, murder, and oppression are so deeply offensive to God.
