When God sent Samuel to anoint a new king, He said, 'the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart' (1 Samuel 16:7). Jesus repeatedly exposed the gap between outward religion and inner reality. The Pharisees tithed mint and cumin but neglected 'the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith' (Matthew 23:23).
