The Biblical Context
The creation of humanity is the crown of God's creative work. Genesis 1:26-27 records, 'God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.' Genesis 2 provides more detail: 'the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul' (Genesis 2:7). God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden, gave him meaningful work, and then declared, 'It is not good that the man should be alone' (Genesis 2:18). He caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, took one of his ribs, and 'made he a woman, and brought her unto the man' (Genesis 2:22). Being made in God's image gives every human being inherent dignity, moral capacity, rationality, and the ability to relate to God.
