What "What Does the Bible Say About Conscience?" Actually Means
Conscience is the inner faculty that distinguishes right from wrong. Paul taught that even Gentiles who lack the written law 'shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness' (Romans 2:15). A 'good conscience' is one that is clear before God (Acts 24:16, 1 Timothy 1:5). Paul spoke of maintaining 'a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men' (Acts 24:16). However, conscience is not infallible — it can be 'seared with a hot iron' through repeated sin (1 Timothy 4:2), made 'weak' through ignorance (1 Corinthians 8:7), or 'defiled' by disobedience (Titus 1:15). Hebrews 9:14 declares that the blood of Christ purges the conscience from dead works. The goal is a conscience that is both sensitive to God and informed by His Word — not the superstitious scrupulosity of legalism, but the healthy moral compass of a heart aligned with Scripture.
