What Does Each Piece of the Armor of God Represent — Meaning Explained

Ephesians 6:14-17 details six pieces of armor. The belt of truth (v.14a) — truth holds everything together; deception is Satan's primary weapon. The breastplate of righteousness (v.14b) — both imputed righteousness (Christ's) and practical righteous living protect the heart. The shoes of the gospel of peace (v.15) — readiness to stand firm and advance with the message of peace with God. The shield of faith (v.16) — active trust in God that extinguishes 'all the fiery darts of the wicked' (doubt, temptation, accusation). The helmet of salvation (v.17a) — assurance of salvation protects the mind from despair and deception. The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (v.17b) — the only offensive weapon, used by Jesus Himself against Satan (Matthew 4:4,7,10). Paul adds prayer as the atmosphere in which all armor operates: 'Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit' (v.18). The armor is God's provision — believers put it on by faith and practice.
