The term 'antichrist' appears only in John's epistles (1 John 2:18,22, 4:3, 2 John 1:7), referring both to a spirit of opposition to Christ and to a specific coming figure. Paul calls him 'the man of sin' and 'the son of perdition' who 'sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God' (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4). Revelation 13 portrays 'the beast' who receives power from Satan, performs signs and wonders, and forces all to receive his mark to buy or sell.
