"Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while." — Mark 6:31 (KJV)
The Biblical Context
Jesus modeled healthy rhythms: He withdrew to pray (Luke 5:16), slept during a storm (Mark 4:38), attended a wedding (John 2:1-2), and fed the crowds before teaching them. He told His disciples, 'Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while' (Mark 6:31). God designed the Sabbath for rest — 'The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath' (Mark 2:27). Elijah, exhausted and suicidal, was ministered to with sleep and food before God gave him new direction (1 Kings 19:5-8). Paul told Timothy, 'Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities' (1 Timothy 5:23) — practical health advice. The body is 'the temple of the Holy Ghost' (1 Corinthians 6:19), implying stewardship of physical health. Proverbs teaches moderation: 'Be not wise in thine own eyes... It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones' (Proverbs 3:7-8). The biblical balance is crucial: self-care is not selfishness or self-indulgence. Jesus said the second greatest commandment is 'love thy neighbour as thyself' (Matthew 22:39) — implying appropriate self-love as the baseline for loving others. Burnout, neglect, and martyrdom complexes are not virtues.
