Predestination vs. Free Will — What Does the Bible Teach — Meaning Explained

This is one of the most debated topics in Christian theology. Scripture clearly teaches God's sovereign choice: 'He hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world' (Ephesians 1:4). Romans 8:29-30 describes a chain from foreknowledge to predestination to calling to justification to glorification. Jesus said, 'No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him' (John 6:44). Yet Scripture equally emphasizes human responsibility: 'Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely' (Revelation 22:17). 'Choose you this day whom ye will serve' (Joshua 24:15). 'Whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life' (John 3:16). God 'is not willing that any should perish' (2 Peter 3:9). Calvinists emphasize God's sovereign election; Arminians emphasize human free choice. Most scholars acknowledge that both truths are taught and that the tension exists because God's ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). The practical result is the same: the gospel is offered to all, and all who come to Christ will be received.
