What "What Does the Bible Say About Laziness?" Actually Means
The book of Proverbs addresses laziness extensively. The 'sluggard' is told to learn from the ant, who works without a supervisor (Proverbs 6:6-8). 'The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat' (Proverbs 13:4). Paul was equally direct: 'If any would not work, neither should he eat' (2 Thessalonians 3:10). Colossians 3:23 instructs believers to work heartily 'as to the Lord.' However, the Bible distinguishes laziness from legitimate rest — God Himself rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2) and Jesus invited His disciples to rest (Mark 6:31). The biblical ideal is diligent, purposeful work balanced with Sabbath rest and trust in God's provision.
