"Heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ." — Romans 8:17 (KJV)
The Biblical Context
Romans 8:17 declares, 'If children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.' The scope of this inheritance is staggering. Eternal life: 'That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life' (Titus 3:7). A heavenly kingdom: 'Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world' (Matthew 25:34). Imperishable treasure: 'An inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you' (1 Peter 1:4). Ruling authority: 'If we suffer, we shall also reign with him' (2 Timothy 2:12). Revelation 21:7 summarizes, 'He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.' This inheritance is guaranteed by the Holy Spirit: 'The earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession' (Ephesians 1:14). Unlike earthly inheritances that can be lost, stolen, or taxed, the believer's inheritance is eternally secure, divinely reserved, and infinitely valuable.
