What "Are Heaven and Hell Real Places?" Actually Means
Jesus spoke more about hell than anyone else in Scripture, treating both heaven and hell as literal realities. Heaven is described as God's dwelling place, a prepared place for God's people (John 14:2-3), the New Jerusalem with streets of gold and no more tears (Revelation 21-22), and ultimately the restoration of perfect fellowship between God and humanity. Hell (Gehenna) is described as eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41), outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 25:30), and the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15). Jesus told the story of the rich man and Lazarus, depicting conscious torment in hades (Luke 16:19-31). The reality of hell underscores the seriousness of sin and the urgency of the gospel. God 'is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance' (2 Peter 3:9). The existence of both destinations gives ultimate meaning to human choices and the offer of salvation through Christ.
