What "What Is the Meaning of Communion?" Actually Means
Jesus instituted communion at the Last Supper. He took bread, broke it, and said, 'This is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me' (1 Corinthians 11:24). He took the cup: 'This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me' (1 Corinthians 11:25). Paul adds, 'For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come' (1 Corinthians 11:26). Christians disagree on what happens during communion. Catholics hold transubstantiation (elements become Christ's actual body and blood). Lutherans teach consubstantiation (Christ is present 'in, with, and under' the elements). Reformed Christians see a spiritual presence. Baptists and many evangelicals view it as a memorial. All agree it is a sacred act of remembrance, thanksgiving, and anticipation. Paul warns against partaking 'unworthily' (1 Corinthians 11:27), calling believers to self-examination before participating.
