The Bible teaches that while Christians are generally called to obey governing authorities, there is a clear limit to that obedience: when the state commands what God forbids or forbids what God commands, the believer must choose to obey God. The primary example of this is found in Acts 5:29, where the apostles, having been ordered to stop preaching Christ, responded, 'We ought to obey God rather than men.' This principle establishes that the authority of the state is not absolute but is delegated by God and therefore subject to His higher law. When human laws conflict with divine mandates, the Christian's first loyalty belongs to the Lord.
