What "What Does the Bible Say About Animals?" Actually Means
God created animals and called them 'good' before creating humans (Genesis 1:20-25). He brought animals to Adam to name, establishing human responsibility over them (Genesis 2:19-20). After the flood, God made a covenant with 'every living creature' (Genesis 9:10). Proverbs states: 'A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast' (Proverbs 12:10). The Law required care for animals: resting on the Sabbath (Exodus 23:12), not muzzling the ox (Deuteronomy 25:4), and helping an enemy's donkey (Exodus 23:5). Jesus noted God's care for sparrows (Matthew 10:29) and ravens (Luke 12:24). Animals will be present in the renewed creation (Isaiah 11:6-9, 65:25). While animals do not have the same spiritual status as humans (made in God's image), they are valued by God and entrusted to human care.
