The Biblical Context
Resistance starts with submission. James 4:7 is one sentence with two halves: 'Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee.' A heart yielded to God is fortified ground; a divided heart invites attack. The order matters — submission first, resistance second.\n\nEphesians 6:10–18 lists the equipment: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer. Each piece is defensive except the sword of the Spirit, which is Scripture wielded against lies. Notice the verb 'stand' appears four times. The believer is not commanded to advance into Satan's territory but to hold ground already won by Christ.\n\nVigilance is required. 1 Peter 5:8 describes the devil as a roaring lion seeking prey. Sober, alert believers are hard targets. Drowsy, isolated believers are easy ones. Stay in fellowship, in the Word, and in prayer — and the resistance promised by James 4:7 will hold.
