Numbers 16 records the rebellion of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram against Moses and Aaron's leadership. Korah, a Levite, along with 250 community leaders, challenges the exclusive priesthood of Aaron's family. Moses proposes a test: each rebel will offer incense before the Lord.
God's judgment is swift and dramatic. The earth opens and swallows Korah, Dathan, and Abiram with their households, and fire consumes the 250 incense-bearers. Even after this display, the congregation grumbles, and a plague kills 14,700 before Aaron's intercession stops it.
