Names of God and Their Meanings

The Mighty Creator God

The first name of God in Scripture, used over 2,000 times. A plural form denoting majesty and the fullness of divine power — the God who creates, judges, and rules over all.

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

The Self-Existent, Covenant-Keeping LORD

The personal, covenant name of God revealed to Moses at the burning bush. Rendered as 'LORD' in small capitals throughout the KJV. It speaks of God's eternal, unchanging being and faithfulness to His promises.

"And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

Lord, Master

A title of authority and ownership. Whereas Yahweh is the personal name, Adonai emphasizes God's sovereign rule and our position as His servants.

"O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens."

God Almighty, All-Sufficient One

The name by which God revealed Himself to Abraham — the God whose power is unlimited and whose provision is more than enough for every need.

"And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect."

The Most High God

The name proclaiming God's supreme position over all creation, all nations, and all other powers. First spoken by Melchizedek as he blessed Abraham.

"And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth."

The Everlasting God

The God who is from eternity to eternity — without beginning and without end. The unchanging foundation in a changing world.

"And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God."

The LORD Will Provide

Spoken by Abraham on Mount Moriah when God provided a ram in place of Isaac. A name that promises God's provision precisely at the place of testing.

"And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen."

The LORD That Healeth Thee

Revealed at Marah when bitter waters were made sweet — God who heals body, soul, and circumstance for those who walk in His ways.

"...for I am the LORD that healeth thee."

The LORD My Banner

The name Moses gave the altar after Israel's victory over Amalek — God Himself is our rallying point and the banner under which we win every spiritual battle.

"And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi."

The LORD Send Peace

Gideon's name for God after he received the assurance he would not die. The peace that quiets fear and reconciles us to God Himself.

"Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom."

The LORD My Shepherd

David's confession of God as personal Shepherd — the One who feeds, leads, protects, and restores the soul of His sheep.

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."

The LORD Our Righteousness

A prophetic name for the coming Messiah, fulfilled in Christ — the only righteousness God will accept is the righteousness God Himself supplies.

"...and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS."

The LORD Is There

The closing name in Ezekiel's vision of the restored city — a promise that God's manifest presence will dwell forever with His people.

"...and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there."

The LORD That Doth Sanctify You

God reveals Himself as the One who sets His people apart for Himself — sanctification is His work in us, not ours.

"...for I am the LORD that doth sanctify you."

The LORD of Hosts

The Commander of the angelic and earthly armies. A name of refuge in conflict — every host of heaven answers to Him.

"...I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied."

Daddy, Beloved Father

The intimate Aramaic word Jesus used in Gethsemane and which the Spirit teaches every believer to cry. Adoption replaces fear with family.

"For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father." — Romans 8:15

The Eternally Existing One

Jesus claimed for Himself the divine name from Exodus 3:14 — staking His identity as God in the flesh. The seven 'I am' sayings of John reveal the fullness of His person.

"Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am." — John 8:58

The Beginning and the End

Christ's self-declaration in Revelation — the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, signifying that all of history begins, continues, and ends in Him.

"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty." — Revelation 1:8

God With Us

The Messianic name given through Isaiah and fulfilled in the birth of Jesus — the eternal God taking on human flesh to dwell among His people.

"Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." — Matthew 1:23

The Eternal Self-Expression of God

John's title for the pre-existent Christ — God's full and final revelation of Himself, made flesh and dwelling among us.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." — John 1:1
