Sela in the Bible
A rocky Edomite fortress, possibly the same as Petra.
Sela (meaning 'rock' or 'cliff') was a fortified city in Edom, often identified with the famous site of Petra. King Amaziah of Judah captured Sela and renamed it Joktheel. The prophets used Edom's rocky stronghold as a symbol of prideful self-reliance that God would bring low.
Modern Location
Possibly Petra or es-Sela in southern Jordan

Why Sela Matters
Sela holds a unique place in Scripture because it stands in the distant lands that remind us God's purposes extend to every corner of the earth. With 2 major biblical events connected to this site — and key figures like Amaziah linked to its story — Sela is far more than a point on an ancient map. It is a place where God acted decisively in human history.
Rooted in the Old Testament narrative, Sela is referenced in 2 key scriptures that reveal God's faithfulness across generations. Sela represents false security in human achievements. No fortress — however impregnable — can protect those who oppose God's purposes.
For today's believer, studying Sela is more than a geography lesson — it is an invitation to see God's faithfulness written across real places and real people. Every mountain, city, and river in Scripture reminds us that God works within history, not apart from it. When you read about Sela, you are standing on the same spiritual ground where Amaziah encountered the living God.
