Matthew 28:20 – Meaning & Devotional
"Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
What This Verse Means
The final words of Matthew's Gospel are among the most comforting in all of Scripture. Jesus doesn't send His disciples on mission alone — He goes with them. 'Alway' means every moment, every day, in every situation. 'Even unto the end of the world' means this promise has no expiration date.
This promise is the foundation for the Great Commission. We can go to all nations because He goes with us. We can face any opposition because He is always present. The task may be overwhelming, but the Companion is omnipotent.
Historical Context
These are Jesus' final recorded words in Matthew, spoken on a mountain in Galilee after His resurrection. He had just given the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-19). His last word to His church is not a command but a promise: I am with you always.
How to Apply This Today
Whatever you face today — a difficult conversation, a new challenge, a lonely season — Jesus is with you. Not occasionally, not in theory, but always, right now, until the very end. Let that truth transform your courage.

Lord Jesus, thank You for being with me always — not just in church but in every moment, every place, every struggle. I am never alone because You are always here. Amen.
