Ephesians 2:8-9 – Meaning & Devotional
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
What This Verse Means
These verses are the clearest statement of salvation by grace in the Bible. We are saved by grace (God's undeserved favor) through faith (our trust in Christ). Both are gifts — even our faith is enabled by God.
Paul eliminates every possible basis for human boasting. We cannot earn, achieve, or deserve salvation. It's a pure gift, removing all room for pride and replacing it with gratitude.
Historical Context
Paul wrote to the Ephesians about the riches of God's grace. In a culture where religious merit was prized, Paul declared that salvation comes entirely by grace. This was revolutionary for both Jewish and Gentile audiences.
How to Apply This Today
Rest in grace. Stop trying to earn what God freely gives. Let gratitude — not guilt or performance — drive your relationship with God.
