Zeruiah Meaning in the Bible

Zeruiah (Hebrew צְרוּיָה) is usually connected to tsori, the balm or resin of Gilead, giving a sense like 'balsam' or 'perfumed with mastic.' The derivation is not secure, but the fragrant-resin reading is the standard one.

She is the daughter of Jesse and the sister of David: 'whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah; Abishai, and Joab, and Asahel, three' (1 Chronicles 2:16). Her three sons are among the most consequential men of David's reign. Joab commanded the army for decades. Abishai was a mighty man who broke through Philistine lines to fetch David water. Asahel was 'as light of foot as a wild roe' and was killed by Abner.

The striking detail is the naming convention. Throughout 1 and 2 Samuel these men are called 'the sons of Zeruiah' — over twenty times — and their father is never named. In a book that traces fathers relentlessly, three of the most powerful men in the kingdom are identified by their mother. Whether she was widowed early or simply the more notable parent, the text does not say.

David's own weary line about them has outlived her: 'these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me' (2 Samuel 3:39). The name is essentially unused today and is difficult in English, but it belongs to one of the few women in the Old Testament whose family line is reckoned through her.
