Editor’s reflection
Latin for evening star — the hour the church has prayed at since the earliest centuries.
Vesper is Latin for 'evening' and for the evening star, the same word behind Vespers, the church's sunset prayer office. Its Greek cousin is Hesperus. The name is not scriptural, but the practice it names is: Psalm 141:2 asks that 'the lifting up of my hands be as the evening sacrifice,' and the evening offering is fixed in the temple calendar of Exodus 29.
Vespers as an ordered service is documented from at least the fourth century and remains part of the Divine Office in Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran practice. Choosing Vesper as a name is effectively choosing an hour of the day — dusk, the end of work, the point at which the day is handed back.
In modern naming it belongs with Juniper, Clover and Wren: a word name with a soft consonant pattern and a clear image behind it. It is still rare enough to be striking, and it carries an obvious sister name in Aurora, the dawn.
“Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.”
Why parents choose Vesper today
- •Ties directly to a real Christian practice — evening prayer
- •Soft, unusual sound with no common spelling variants to correct
- •Natural counterpart to dawn names such as Aurora and Dawn
